WayUp with Elana Widmann (4/5/2017)
By: Tabby Miller
Elana Widmann joined TU-AMA via video chat for a live speaker session. She graduated with a marketing degree and worked at a small public relations firm in New York City. For the past two years, she’s been working as the field marketing manager for WayUp, the leading digital platform in connecting students and recent graduates with employment opportunities. WayUp has over 3.5 million users across 6300 campuses and over 10,000 of those users are Temple students and graduates.
WayUp works in 3 easy steps. First, students and recent graduates fill out their profile with their resume information, fields of interests, and personal background. Then, WayUp shows them only the jobs that they’re qualified for based on the information from their profile. This makes WayUp different from other job platforms like Linkedin. While Linkedin is a great networking platform, it shows users all jobs, not just jobs they’re qualified for. WayUp shows job listings from big-name companies as well as startup businesses. Users can apply to these jobs or save them for later straight from their dashboard. Because WayUp only shows users jobs they’re qualified for, a third of users who apply to jobs get hired.
As the field marketing director, Widmann is in charge of recruiting, training, and managing over 700 WayUp student brand ambassadors across 300 campuses. Ambassadors are responsible for driving student sign ups, planning community leadership events on campuses, and informing people about the services that WayUp has to offer. Maintaining communications with over 700 students can be difficult, especially due to time zone differences and the tendency for students to operate on a different schedule than most working professionals. Widmann uses email, texting, and Facebook groups to keep in contact with WayUp’s student brand ambassadors.
WayUp embraces the culture that ideas can come from anyone in the company, and they foster an environment that supports and encourages creativity and innovation. WayUp is looking to expand; currently their team consists of 51 members, but they’re looking to double their staff by the end of 2107. They want to be able to assist users in finding jobs beyond entry level positions. If you’re searching for a job or internship, WayUp is great resource for any student!
