TD Bank with Christine Rumpf (3/3/2017)
By: Tabby Miller
Christine Rumpf, Temple graduate and product marketing manager at TD Bank, spoke to TU-AMA about her career and how she got to be where she is today. Christine didn’t know that she wanted study marketing until a few years into her education; she studied advertising and journalism first. As a graduate student at Temple University, she started working as a sales representative for WBEN-FM, a radio station in Philadelphia. Although the benefits of the job were great, Christine didn’t want to be a salesperson. And with the economic conditions of 2008, she found her client pool was shrinking. She began looking for a different job that would allow her to be more involved with marketing.
Because of her sales experience at WBEN-FM, Christine was hired as a store manager for TD Bank. With over 1,200 locations, TD Bank is one of the ten largest banks in the country. They’re headquartered in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. They focus on putting their customers first. She worked in that position for two years, and while she didn’t care much for the job itself, she really liked the company she was working for. Being a store manager was the first step to her career in TD Bank. Looking back on it, Christine says that her experience as a general manager aided her work in future positions. With her journalism skills, she moved to a position as communications manager for retail operations. She was closer to the career in marketing that she wanted and used networking within the company to get her there; after three and a half years as communications manager, she became a marketing specialist. While she was working with internal marketing instead of external marketing as she originally planned, she liked the work she was doing. After her first year in the position, Christine had the opportunity to run an external campaign for the Special Olympics. The skills she learned while working with internal marketing helped prepare her for external marketing.
Change came when TD Bank hired a new chief marketing officer who formed a product marketing department. Within the new department, Christine became product marketing manager. As part of her role, she’s served as strategic lead for commercial banking, strategic lead for small business digital marketing, strategic lead for small business month marketing campaigns, and strategic and marketing communications lead for foreign exchange. She works with the commercial department of TD Bank to find the best marketing strategy to achieve a business objective. With her new position, Christine realized just how customer centric TD Bank is. She says that the education she received at Temple helped her understand audience perceptions. She’s able to think about things from the perspective of the customers. Since TD Bank is dedicated to the community, understanding customers is very important for success.
Christine says there’s challenges working with banking: the industry is very competitive. She advises students to always prepare themselves and constantly learn new skills. One of the most important things Christine learned from her experience throughout her career is that even though you might not be where you want to be, the experience you get out of the position will help you learn the skills you need to succeed later on.
