Most Small-Business Owners Buy These 5 Digital Marketing Myths
By: Devonte Grant
In Dan Scalco’s Most Small-Business Owners Buy These 5 Digital Marketing Myths article he speaks on 5 key elements of digital marketing and how they may be misinterpreted, hence “5 Digital Marketing Myths.” Digital marketing is a new concept yet it’s very important in the world today as many consumers initially hear of a product via a digital platform. I’ll outline Scalco’s five myths throughout this blog.
The concept that digital marketing is only for large businesses is a myth, mainly because the evolution of technology has made it cheaper and affordable. It comes down to how the money is spent. “While it is true that the higher your budget, the grander your digital marketing campaign can be, don’t assume that you need tens of thousands of dollars to get started” (Scalco). However years ago digital marketing was only for big businesses because they were the only ones who could afford it. But since the playing field is more level, smaller businesses now have a chance to implement digital marketing campaigns.
In the digital age many things move quickly leading to the perception that everything is instant. That too, however is a myth as marketing campaigns all take time to really form and become effective. Another important myth is that more traffic equals more money. “In theory, yes, this is true but it isn’t the goal of digital marketing” (Scalco). Additionally the highest ROI comes from email marketing when used correctly. Lastly it’s not imperative to be on every social platform, as you may spread yourself too thin. “It’s better to give 100% on two or three social platforms than it is to give it 50% on all of them” (Scalco). As with all marketing the most important thing is to segment and target your market(s). Digital marketing has certainly changed the landscape of marketing and the marketing plans have changed with it. However certain elements stay in place such as cost allocation for marketing budgets and the segmentation of markets.
